How to apply

How to apply for postgraduate study

Applicants for graduate courses should apply to the University in the first instance, and application should be made through the University’s Postgraduate Admissions Office (PAO) for most postgraduate courses; exceptions are:

Current undergraduate members of Hughes Hall wishing to apply for graduate courses are encouraged to consult their Director of Studies or tutor.

Hughes Hall welcomes Masters and Doctoral students across the academic spectrum and our lively student research community is connected to every field of endeavour. There is information about our areas of focus and academic activity in the Study and Research section of the website.

Full details on how to apply can be found on the University’s Postgraduate Study website.

Application deadlines

We advise all applicants to apply as early as possible after thoroughly researching the courses, the funding available, and the University as a whole.

Find more about the application deadlines on the University Postgraduate Study pages.

After you apply

Once your application has been accepted by the University, your application will be sent initially to the first college on your preference list. To be considered by Hughes Hall you should list us as your first preference college. There is an Application processing flowchart to help you see what happens next after applying.

If Hughes Hall can offer you a place, then we will write to you with details of our offer. You can find all relevant information on our Postgraduate offer holders page.

Any offer of a place will be made on condition that you satisfy the University’s academic and financial conditions for admission.

Accepting your University offer and financial liability

If you received a conditional offer from the University, you will be given a deadline by which you must either accept or decline that offer. Please, note that the offer will be withdrawn if you do not accept it by the given deadline.

You are encouraged to accept your offer even if you are waiting for confirmation of funding or are not yet able to meet the other conditions of your offer. You can withdraw your application any time and if you withdraw before joining your course, you will not be liable for course fees.

Find more information about the deadlines for accepting your offer here and about withdrawing your offer here.

Are you worried about your application?

If you know that you are unable to meet your offer conditions by the deadline, please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Office (PAO) as soon as possible via their online form. They might be able to give you a deadline extension.

You can also apply for a deferral if you wish to change the start date of your course. Please note that you may only apply to defer your offer if you have applied for a research degree and it is not possible to defer entry to the next academic year.

In any case, if you are worried that you might not be able to start your course in time, please contact the PAO and your prospective faculty and college for advice. The sooner you let us know about your situation the sooner we can offer you help.
