Student stories: NHS doctor returns to education to specialise in Public Health

Sara is from the UK and a medical doctor by background. She tells us more.

“After working in different NHS departments for a couple of years as a junior doctor, I decided to specialise in Public Health, which led me to Hughes Hall!”

The Population Health Sciences course at Cambridge has given me the skill set to be able to prosper in my career moving forward, and I was pleasantly surprised by how everyone around here is supportive, friendly, and wants you to do well.

Sara, MPhil in Population Health Sciences, enjoys living 15 minutes from the Botanic Gardens

I chose Hughes Hall because it is a mature college, and its location within Cambridge is great. The college is so diverse and inclusive, and the Botanic Gardens, only about 15 minutes away, is a highlight!

One of the greatest assets of being part of the College and the wider University is the people and the networking opportunities we have to share and discuss ideas. You are in an environment surrounded by experts in their fields.

Cambridge has a lot of opportunities to explore other interests outside your course. Throughout my time here, I participated in Hughes Hall Art Festival and had the opportunity to attend several talks and events, including the Zimmern Medical Lecture & Dinner hosted by Hughes Hall. Other talks I have attended range in topics, from those on using AI in medicine to biological anthropology, and even astrology!

My advice to those applying would be to make the most of the opportunities here. Time flies by, and the terms are really short! I realised that although it may not seem like it, you will actually learn a lot more than you think you did.
